Boca Grande Update 17 Mar

Boca Grande, fl.17 March 2010Fishing this week has been below average so far.  I trust it will pick up now that the weather is warming.  I did see several snook in the backcountry yesterday and had no trouble with seatrout.  Redfish are rated good to excellent depending on the tide.  High winds have made many waters cloudy. Only the backcountry waters are clear enough to sight fish.  The clear water of the back country requires stealth and rather long casts when fishing for redfish.  The reds…See More

Boca Grande Update 2/1/10

Boca Grande, Fl. Report1/31/10Fishing was tougher this week.  Anglers fishing with me did fairly well in spite of the adverse conditions.  We caught mostly seatrout and a few redfish. Jim Leiner of New York caught several small redfish and about 40 seatrout on Wednesday.  Eight of the trout were keeper size, so Jim was happy.  Heloves to eat a few now and then.  Malcolm Lawson and his guest wade fished on Thursday taking one 26 inch redfish from Whiddens Creek and severalseatrout to 18 inches…See More

Boca Grande, Fl 28 Sept

Boca Grande, Fl28 Sept 09Outstanding fishing this week in Boca Grande was highlighted by large snook, baby tarpon and an abundance of seatrout. There is no better time of the year than the fall on Florida's west coast. Unusually high tides in the morning produced strong water movement as the days went on. Baitfish shoals grew larger and the fish fed aggressively.Dusty Sprague and I were able to jump four little tarpon in the deep backcountry on Thursday and then managed several snook along the…See More

Saltwater Report from Florida

Boca Grande, Fl.19 Sept. 2009Anglers fishing with me this week enjoyed outstanding fishing for seatrout, snook and redfish. The most exciting fish were snook on top water poppers. Our biggest was 29 inches taken by Dusty Sprague of North Port, Florida on a modified Gartside Gurgler. Other great catches included Dennis Kowal'sfirst redfish on a fly (see pix), Al White's redfish and Ron Whiteley's 22 inch seatrout. Dennis used a shrimp imitation copied from a Tim Borski design.Al, a fishing guide…See More

Boca Grande, Fl on the Fly

Boca Grande, Fl.3 Sept.2009Snook season is open now, but that doesn't mean much to me. I fish them all year and practise catch and release. The funny thing is the redfish are being super active, too. This week I found schools of redfish in Pine Island Sound and near Bull Bay, plus received several reports of catches in the Placida area. Recent trips have produced slot size seatrout and mangrove snapper from grass flats 3 to 6 feet deep where there is good tidal flow. The snook in the back…See More

Boca Grande, Fl. Report

Boca Grande, Fl.11 Aug 2009Our fishing this summer is very good. So many elusive species have been easily accessible now that the fishing pressure is light and the days are long andwarm. Although I have been away to Colorado for two weeks, I put in a few days here before writing to you all. Let's start with the Colorado trip.I spent time at the Federation of Fly Fishers annual conclave in Loveland enjoying great company, learning more and better ways to teach fly casting andgetting a better…See More

Welcome Captain Pete Greenan! Thanks for joing us. I get to the Florida area to fish once a year or more. How is the fishing lately... has the red tide subsided in the last year?
